[thanos had never been short on reminders of what he could take from her.

her life, he'd say without actually saying it, would always be in his hands. her losses would only ever be his gain, her victories in combat would only ever be his. his favor had rested on a fragile thread, balance forever easily tipped in one direction or the other. life, death; all could be taken, and none could be grasped.

but for four years, she'd been foolish enough to let herself almost believe that things could be different. that she'd been free and safe, surrounded by people she loved and who loved her in return, that she could sleep without a dagger under her pillow and could wake up surrounded by warmth and soft, off-key humming in her ear. her mistake had been to let her guard down, to ignore the voice she'd known was there in the back of her mind warning her of the truth.

thanos is gone, dead by the joint effort of her and her sister's hands, but the satisfaction of his death would never belong to her, to them. on top of drax, mantis, groot, peter, he'd taken that, too.

she emerges from the jump point just above terra's — earth's — atmosphere, and her heart sinks to the pit of her stomach, just as it always does. a tear rolls out of the corner of her eye, just as it always does. it's been just over three years; she doesn't believe that will ever change.

nothing will change, no, but they've found some good people along the way. tony stark had shown her a great deal of kindness before he'd (understandably) left the fight behind him. carol is a formidable ally and is steadily becoming something close to a friend. she doesn't know natasha that well, but she likes her; there's a kindred understanding that comes with similar priorities.

natasha — who she's due to meet with in approximately five minutes.

gamora mentally shakes herself and eases the benatar into its landing cycle, sinking below the clouds and toward the avengers compound. there's no more time to dwell now than there ever has been.

her breaths are calm and her hands are steady by the time she touches down on the landing pad and steps out of the hatch to meet the other woman. she doesn't quite return the smile, but she gives a nod in return. of course, it says.

they walk in silence for a moment toward the compound. then:]

I apologize for Rocket. He doesn't know when to let some things go.

[she'd been on parts of the call, in and out of jump points, but had gotten the gist.]
